Middle East Centre - Zaha Hadid (family twist)
I came across this building reading my Frame magazine issue May/June 2013 and thought it was an incredible design by Zaha hadid, it certainly went with her typical brand identity of spaceship like/modern futuristic shapes she loves to use to create her buildings.
the three storey Softbridge building, an extension of Zaha hadids middle east centre at St Antony's college houses a library, a lecture theatre and an archive facility.I love the sweeping curves this building has at the front and completely trounces the buildings next to it in terms of design and style, it stands out just on its own from the shape itself nothing else. the use of white on the material reflects light well making it a magnificent building.
The Twist
My brother is a design manager for a construction company that is helping build this fabulous building and that is where I first heard of it. I was wowed by the fact this company was working with the likes of Zaha Hadid. Then seeing it in my frame magazine It was our little claim to fame.
He also told me some Intel into this building that will make you more impressed with the build not just the designer. the two houses on either side are listed housed and couldn't be knocked down. at the front the tree is protected by a natural cause so cannot be taken out and at the back of the building is a church with a graveyard obviously not being able to be touched. this provided a problem for the constructors to build the building in the first place but the clever employees with expertise have obviously found a way.
The builders should get as much credit for the building as the designers do as they are the ones that make it happen in the end result.
Here's to all the construction companies out there building the newest craziest designs these mad architects are coming up with these days!
